The Building of Architecture, Hanyang University, was designed with the concept of ‘interactive spaces for encounters'. Learning can be more vitalized through interaction rather than in unilateral teaching. This interaction will be possible not only between students and teachers, but also between students, sometimes visitors. Also, discussion through chance encounters can be one of ways by interactive learning. In this context, the project was aimed to incorporate educational space for interactive learning.
This concept was realized in two communal spaces. Firstly, a continuous stair from the 1st to the 5th floor accelerates spontaneous interactions, connecting design studios through atria. Also, these atria created by the slanting continuous openings overcome the physical limitation of vertically stacked studios and provides ample opportunities for encounters. In addition, U-Glass, a finishing material, along a stair filters out natural light and gives a characteristic to the space. Secondly, an atrium, from 6th to 8th floor, connects the multipurpose learning space vertically. The first level of the atrium on the 6th floor is used as a social space such asa lounge in the usual times, besides it becomes an event space.
The school will have many "encounters" in communal spaces for interaction, collaboration, and socializing. And this accidental encounter can give true meaning of learning at school.
